Hello from Mary Hooper, and thanks for visiting my website. At the moment I’m writing a book for 8-12s. It’s set in Victorian times and is about a boy called Alfie who is apprenticed to a chimney sweep. One day he gets stuck in the chimney of a big manor house and…well, I don’t want to give the story away but it involves some spooky goings-on. The working title is WHERE THE GHOSTS ARE, and I’ll be letting you know how it’s going when I get a bit further with the plot. POPPY and POPPY IN THE FIELD are set in the Great War (1914-1918) and were published a year or so back. Both were shortlisted for the Historical Association’s Young Quills award, and POPPY actually won it. POPPY (with a particularly lovely new cover) has been published by Bloomsbury in the US and I am hoping it will do well enough over there that they take its follow up, POPPY IN THE FIELD. I have written in two American nurses into this book just to emphasise the USA’s involvement in the War. My latest Barrington Stoke books are RING OF ROSES set at the time of the Great Plague, and A DARK TRADE, set in Victorian times and concerning a girl named Gina who would much rather be a boy called George. I’m happy to say that A DARK TRADE has just won the Rapid Reads category of the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards! Do drop me a line if you want to ask me anything about my writing – and, of course, on Kindle or on paper – keep reading!
